Goods and Services (GST)

GST (Goods and Services Tax) is a unified indirect tax system introduced in India on 1st July 2017 to replace multiple taxes like VAT, Service Tax, and Excise Duty. It is applicable on the supply of goods and services and is collected at every stage of value addition, while the final burden is borne by the end consumer.

A business must register for GST if its annual turnover exceeds ₹40 lakh for goods or ₹20 lakh for services, or if it is involved in inter-state sales, e-commerce, or wants to claim input tax credit.

Under the current GST rules, businesses are required to issue proper GST invoices, file returns on a monthly or quarterly basis, and comply with regulations like Input Tax Credit (ITC), E-Way Bill for goods movement above ₹50,000, and HSN code classification. Small businesses can opt for the Composition Scheme to reduce compliance by paying tax at a fixed rate.

GST returns such as GSTR-1 (sales details), GSTR-3B (summary return), and GSTR-9 (annual return) must be filed online through the official GST portal. Failure to comply may result in penalties and late fees.

GST registration requires essential documents such as PAN card, Aadhaar card, business registration proof, address proof, bank account details, and photographs of the owner or directors.

For companies and LLPs, additional documents like Certificate of Incorporation, MOA, AOA, and Digital Signature Certificate (DSC) are required. The registration process is fully online, where the application is submitted, verified through OTP, and processed by the government. Once approved, a GSTIN (Goods and Services Tax Identification Number) is issued, usually within 3 to 7 working days.

GST has simplified the taxation system by creating a transparent and efficient structure, enabling seamless tax credit flow and reducing the cascading effect of taxes. It supports business growth by standardizing tax rates across the country and improving compliance through a digital system. However, businesses must ensure timely return filing and proper documentation to avoid penalties and maintain smooth operations.
